Created for the Morris 1100 band, this clip is an homage to the the vintage Viewmaster toys, and their charming and adventurous ‘3D’ picture reels. The beautiful and intricate dioramas that artists produced for them are my inspiration here.
The Viewmaster was an enchanting escape into a 3D world well before mobile video, gaming, Augmented Reality or Virtual Reality found a foothold.
The main lyrics, sung in French, translate to “We are seven stories, spinning in space”.
The idea that every story we know is either one, or a combination of, only seven stories, led to developing a narrative that incorporated this notion. These main themes are generally noted as; 1: Overcoming the monster, 2: Rags to riches, 3: The Quest, 4: Voyage and return, 5: Comedy, 6: Tragedy and 7: Rebirth.
Whilst constrained by production, design, and duration limits, I’ve tried to capture elements of all these themes within the narrative.
The uptempo, fun, psychedelic, space romp odyssey instrumental tune also needed visuals to match...and as per the brief; contain a flying Morris 1100...I hope you enjoy the result.
Lyrics:
“Ah yes, the 1100, LET'S GO!”
“We are seven stories, spinning in space. We are just seven stories, spinning in space.”
“Before the game is played, before the game is played.”
(This exclamation, at 1:54 'Avant les joux sont faits', literally translates to 'before the game is played’, but means 'before the die is cast/the gig’s up/game is over' etc)
